Independence Day: Free and Equal

I am still Homeschool Atheist Momma!

As we pause as a nation to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, let us remember that we are still not all free. Every time someone has the temerity to say that their values trump yours, every time a group of people are excluded or treated as inferior, and every time one person seeks to disempower any other person for their color, creed, religion, sexuality, or any other thing, it becomes more and more obvious that we have a ways to go before we live by the founding principles of our nation: free and equal.

Today my children had opportunity to witness this in action and both of them were angry and incensed at what they saw. I am grateful every day for their good minds and hearts. Our country has the mechanisms for freedom; let us have the knowledge and the courage to live it.

So on this day of our nation’s birth remember that all Americans are equal, pledge with me to continue to fight for equal treatment, no discrimination, and a truly free society.
